Starting Your Yoga Practice?
Yay! I am so glad you are reading this and taking your first steps to starting your practice.
Practicing yoga is far simpler than you think. As we are now starting to discover, yoga is not just a physical practice but rather the practice of self-awareness and upliftment.
So all you really need is yourself. However, there are a few other things we can use to make our practice and experience more comfortable 🙂
Ideals for starting your practice:
1. Get yourself a yoga mat!
If you cannot get a yoga mat, you can also use a towel or a blanket. It helps to have a slightly soft surface to practice upon.
2. Create yourself a yoga space
Ideally, when practicing yoga, you want to have a space that is away from distraction. Find or create a space where you feel comfortable and have enough space to move and be yourself.
3. Wear something that is comfortable
You want to wear comfortable and loose clothing that you can stretch and easily move in. Comfort is key!
4. Grab a glass of water
For me personally, I always like to have water with me when I practice yoga. For drinking either during the practice or certainly afterward, Yoga is exceptionally detoxing for the body so please be sure to rehydrate and drink at least 250ml after a practice. Remember our bodies are 70% water.
5. Pay Music if you want
I always find that putting on some great uplifting or calming music really helps me relax and flow easily into my practice. This is not necessarily the case with everyone. Some people prefer silence. And this is really the journey that you will go on as your get more and more into your own practice. You will find what works for you and what you like.
6. Lighting incense or candles
This is by no means a prerequisite for practicing yoga! But personally when I have the opportunity I love to light some incense or candles when practicing yoga so just create a certain ambiance and setting.
7. You just need You
Ultimately all you truly need to practice yoga is yourself. Yoga is the process of connecting to and discovering the self so always remember that there is no right or wrong way.
